EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE TALENTED CHARLIE DAVID
CHARLIE DAVID, FRONT & CENTER

AOW just cannot get enough of Dante's Cove, we tracked down Charlie David who plays the lead character Toby in the steamy series airing on here! tv .

Our team rented the first season and completely fell in love with Toby and Kevin (played by Gregory Michael). The couple manage to actually have a gay relationship worth writing home about. The love scenes are both racy and sweet, what an beautiful combination.

INTERVIEW WITH CHARLIE DAVID

AOW: Your web site “Welcome to Charliewood” has received awards and much recognition. How did you come up with such a cool idea?

DAVID: I wanted to create a web site that is interactive, fun and memorable. We are in a time of technologically savvy information gathering and I wanted to design a platform that is infinitely expandable and 3 dimensional. It's possible to use the site almost like a video game in that you can go up and down the streets, in and out of buildings, view video, hear mp3 files and find little surprises along the way.

I'll be launching a new updated version of the site just after Christmas with even more interactive fun. www.charliedavid.com

AOW: There are so many things you can find out if you poke around, I have been back a few times and found something new each time. By the way, love the pin up section. How are you affiliated with CTM International?

DAVID: I've always been really interested in business. CTM International Enterprises Inc. is a full service Talent Agency based in Vancouver, Canada that I co-own with my business partner, Linda Carter. I don't do representation for other artists personally but am involved with the company on an executive level. Our agents represent actors for film, television and commercials. We also have a background roster of over 300 extras. www.ctminternational.ca

AOW: Your band 4now opened for Destiny's Child and Pink; did you choose an acting career over a singing career?

DAVID: Acting has always been my first love. Music has always been an important part of my life. I grew up playing the piano and the organ and dabbled unsuccessfully on the violin but acting is really where my heart is. There have been points where being able to carry a tune in a bucket has been helpful but I definitely wouldn't try to pay my rent as a singer.

AOW: We all know you sing and act, I also hear that you write and own a production company called Border2Border Entertainment Inc.

DAVID: I started Border2Border Entertainment Inc. this past year as a place where I can develop and produce projects that I'm personally really passionate about. Often in the film and television industry as actors we take roles that are basically, well, a paycheck. The really great roles, the break-out roles, the roles that have enough juice to really exercise your acting chops are few and far between.

By having my own production company I can develop projects that I feel are important and need to be told, stories that may not find a home on mainstream television networks but are nevertheless compelling. My mandate is projects that reflect the LGBT community but we are not exclusive to that. I have a great film targeted for the lesbian community by a very talented writer and also a mainstream thriller script optioned. We are definitely open to receiving scripts and proposals.

AOW: What inspired you to write this screenplay for the film Mulligans?

DAVID: Honestly? I was at the National Cable Television Conference in San Francisco a couple years ago and there was this trailer playing from a film called Tides of War with Matt Battaglia… I thought, damn, who is that guy?!? Matt's a few decades older that me but it got me thinking about a concept similar to The Graduate but with a twist… you can check it out at www.mulligansthemovie.com

AOW: What is a Mulligan?

DAVID: A Mulligan is a term used in golf. It's a shot not counted against the score, allowed by the other players when one has an unusually poor shot. Of course in the film, it has symbolic implications as well.

AOW: Who is your character in the film?

DAVID: I will play the role of Chase, a college guy who comes to spend the summer holidays with his best friend's family and ends up having an affair with the father…

AOW: Is there anything in particular that attracted you to him?

DAVID: The character of Chase resonates with me on a number of levels. Chase is secretly in love with his best friend who is straight. I think a lot of us in the queer community have similar stories. Also I really wanted to explore the dynamics of family and what happens when secrets start to reveal themselves. The film is really about the choices we make and when and if it's appropriate to give a second chance.

AOW: There are two characters that have not been cast yet, Birdy and Nathan how are you taking auditions for those roles?

DAVID: We held initial auditions for those roles and the remainder of the cast in Vancouver and Victoria to see if we could put our cast together there locally as we're planning to shoot in and around Victoria on Vancouver Island. Both the roles of Nathan and Birdy are crucial in delivery and looks to match the family so it's not an easy task. You know, it's funny though, it always seems to come together. I know the right actors will come into the mix.

AOW: Mulligans is described as a dark romantic comedy, can you see yourself writing something like Broke back Mountain?

DAVID: Brokeback Mountain is a beautiful, award winning film. I can only hope to draw a comparison like that in my career. I definitely intend to keep writing until all the voices in my head have their stories told…

AOW: Name one thing that you had to give up to be where you are today

DAVID: As a performer my life has been a bit gypsy like. I've been traveling and touring with shows since I was fifteen and after a while I got used to living out of suitcases and hotel rooms. I've been really blessed to travel the world through my hosting and acting work but for a long time that came with the sacrifice of not having a boyfriend in my life. I'm doing a lot better at the balance act now. I definitely want a family and kids. Career is very important to me but so is my personal life.

AOW: Who is “the actor” you would love to star opposite?

DAVID: I really respect Gael Garcia Bernal. I think he's had an amazing career thus far with challenging roles. It would be a dream to work with him. There are so many though… Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Tea Lioni, Edward Norton, Johnny Depp. They're all brilliant in my books and like taking a Masters Class to watch them work.

AOW: I read about your coming out story to your mother when you were sixteen and later coming out as an actor. Many people advised you to stay in the closet. Were you scared that you would not work if you came out?

DAVID: Definitely I had reservations and a lot of people in my life warned me not to for that very reason… that I would never work again. I couldn't let that fear cripple me or the belief that we're each on our own journey of education and understanding of the world. I'd rather live in truth and fail, than live in the pain of denying who I am for the comfort of someone else.

AOW: You were honored by Out Magazine as one of the “Out 100 “for remarkable contributions to Gay Culture in 2005 that is big! How did it make you feel?

DAVID : I was extremely excited to be brushing shoulders with the likes of Sir Elton John, Sharon Stone and Melissa Etheridge. Those are big shoes to walk beside! I hope I can do for charity and visibility in the future what these luminaries have done.

AOW : I read someplace that you said you would not be satisfied until you graced the cover of Vogue, what would that mean to you?

DAVID: Well… that was actually a joke. I mean Vogue's a great magazine but the comment was more a shout out to Madonna than an actual life aspiration of mine personally!

JON & CHARLIE (from Dante's Cove)

AOW: Okay, now I have to ask the one question everyone wants to know, are you in a relationship?

DAVID: Yes, I'm in a wonderful relationship with an extremely talented, visionary, gracious, and handsome guy. I'm very lucky.

AOW: Have you accomplished what you thought you would thus far?

DAVID: There are days when I'm content as I look at the journey thus far and days when I reflect on my mountain of aspirations and think… I gotta do more!! Get to work!

AOW: If you could not be an actor, what would you do for a living?

DAVID: You know I am doing all the things I want to do. I absolutely love acting and when I'm not doing that I'm pursuing business and writing. I love creating projects, the excitement and challenge of selling ideas to investors and broadcasters, and the amazing energy of bringing people together to create.

My position as a business owner and entrepreneur satisfies any gambling habits I may ave otherwise developed and the ability to play as an actor and writer really satisfies my soul, so I have the best of both worlds.

If I had to choose another career, I think I would devote my life to the study of theology and the paranormal… maybe I'll get to come back and try that.

AOW: What songs are stored on your Ipod right now?

DAVID: I am so eclectic!! Yowza… well, I have my Italian classes, some favorite podcast including the here! podcast with Josh and Sara, and my musical taste is really old school for the most part: Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sinatra, Earth Wind & Fire, Natalie Cole. Some of my favorite contemporary artists are Mozella, Deep Dish, Marc Devigne, and Imogen Heap.

AOW : What inspires you?

DAVID: Good questions, ideas just pop into my brain and I don't always know where they come from. Like last week I had this idea suddenly flash in my mind to create a piece of art for the outside foyer of my house. I was going to Palm Springs for the weekend and imagined myself finding a car hood to paint… on the way back to Los Angeles I saw a silver glint in the desert and pulled over. It wasn't a hood of a car but the front panel so I tossed it in my truck and took it home where I painted it. It looks pretty cool… just hope my neighbors don't think a junk yard dog moved in!!

AOW: Give us five words that describe your life right now.

DAVID: Intention-driven, Manifesting, Obstacle-smashing, Fulfilled, and Awakened

AOW: What is your one guilty pleasure?

DAVID: Definitely dessert… or desserts that include fruit… or chocolate chip cookies.

AOW: Tell us, what does Charlie know for sure?

I know that each of us is here to fulfill a purpose. Each day gives us the opportunity to dream and manifest those dreams. There are no restrictions to what we can achieve; we are beings of infinite power and possibility. When we imagine our life the way we wish it to be and take productive steps toward that vision… it will happen.

ONE WORD: " BEAUTIFUL"

Speaking with Charlie is inspiring, he is a beautiful man inside and out. With such talent and charisma, I believe anything he sets his sights on is bound to happen. I can see a David/Bernal film in the future.
